Tamil Nadu chief minister O Panneerselvam letter to Prime minister Narendra Modi

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister O Panneerselvam on Wednesday sent a letter requesting the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to advise the Karnataka government not to proceed with its plan to construct two reservoirs across the Cauvery river. Media reports suggest that Karnataka has invited a global Expression of Interest (EoI) for a technical feasibility study to construct the reservoirs at Mekedatu. As much as 2,500 acres of forestland would be submerged in the region. Tamil Nadu’s contention is that the reservoirs were not contemplated in the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, notified by the Centre in February 2013. “Karnataka has been repeatedly violating the final order of the tribunal, seriously jeopardizing the rights of the lower riparian state and affecting the livelihood of lakhs of farmers. The latest in the series of violation is their proposal to go ahead with the construction of two reservoirs at Mekedatu,” Panneerselvam said in a letter to the Prime Minister. The state government has already moved Supreme Court to restrain Karnataka from executing the Shivasamudram and Mekedatu hydro-electric projects by Karnataka and the case is still pending. O Panneerselvam urged Prime Minister to advise the Karnataka government to withhold the EoI and not to take any steps to execute any hydropower, irrigation schemes and any other schemes in the guise of drinking water supply in the Cauvery basin of Karnataka without the consent of the Tamil Nadu government. “I also request you to instruct the Union ministries of environment and forests and water resources not to give any clearance to any project posed by Karnataka without consulting the Tamil Nadu government,” the chief minister said. o Panneerselvam stressed on the need for setting up a permanent monitoring mechanism like the Cauvery Management Board and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee in accordance with tribunal order.
