ஆஸ்திரேலியாவில் பயங்கரமான காட்டு தீ ஒன்று உருவாகி மிக வேகமாக பரவி சுமார் 1000 வீடுகளுக்கு எரித்து சாம்பலாக்கி உள்ளது. ஆஸ்திரேலியாவின் நியூ சவுத் வேல்ஸ் மாகாணத்தில் உள்ள காட்டு பகுதியில் சுமார் 15 இடங்களில் பயங்கரமான கட்டுக்கு அடங்காத காட்டுத்தீ பற்றி பரவியுள்ளது. வீசும் காற்றினுடைய வேகம் மிக அதிகமாக உள்ளதால் தீ மளமளவென வேகமாக பரவி கொளுந்துவிட்டு எரிகின்றது. இதனால் காட்டுப்பகுதி அருகில் மற்றும் அதை ஒட்டியுள்ள லேக் முன்மோர்க், சிட்னி, புளுமவுன் டெய்ன்ஸ் உள்ளிட்ட பல இடங்களில் கடுமையான புகைமூட்டமாக உள்ளது.
2 ஆயிரத்திற்கும் மேற்பட்ட தீயணைப்பு வீரர்கள், இந்த காட்டு தீயை அணைக்கும் பணியில் ஈடுபட்டிருக்கிறார்கள். அப்பகுதியில் வாழ்ந்து வந்த மக்களை உடனடியாக வெளியேற்றினார்கள் எனினும் அப்பகுதியில், 1000க்கு அதிகமான வீடுகள் எரிந்து நாசமானது. அந்த காட்டு தீயினால் உண்டான புகை மற்றும் சாம்பல் அதன் அருகில் உள்ள சிட்னி நகரில் மேகங்கள் மேகங்கள் போல் படிந்திருக்கிறது. இதனால் சிட்னி நகரமே மழை மேக மூட்டத்துடன் இருப்பது போல் காட்சியளிக்கிறது. இந்த காட்டுத் தீயில் சிக்கி 62 வயது முதியவர் ஒருவர் பலியாகியுள்ளார். அவர், தனது வீட்டை காக்க முயன்ற போது இந்த துயர சம்பவம் நடந்தது.

Hundreds of HOUSES were destroyed and one 63 year old man person died as more than 20 bush fires continued to rage in the Australian state of New South Wales on Friday.
A 63-year-old man collapsed and died while defending his home at Lake Munmorah on the Central Coast late on Thursday. Damage to property was yet to be assessed, but authorities feared that hundreds of homes, including that of firefighters, had been lost with the worst-hit areas in the Blue Mountains, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation said. The Blue Mountains, Lithgow and the Southern Highlands continued to be under the grip of the fires that devoured vegetation in about 91,000 hectares throughout the state. Thousands had been urged to evacuate, as the flames surged into populated areas at the foothills of the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands, Central Coast, Lithgow, Hunter Valley and Port Stephens. In Yellow Rock, by the Nepean River on Sydney’s western fringe, entire streets of houses were destroyed, the report said.
Nearly 1,500 fire engines from NSW and the neighboring states were fighting the flames, said to be the worst in decades. Traffic on major roads including the Hume Highway south of Sydney and the Pacific Highway north of Wyong remained suspended stranding thousands of travelers. Power outages were also reported from several parts of the state. The Newcastle airport was closed and evacuated except for a skeleton staff because of a bushfire raging 16 kilometers away. Prime Minister Tony Abbott praised the efforts of fire crews saying that “these are ordinary people who, on an extraordinary day, come together to support their community and to protect their fellow Australians.”
